Durham residents paying for broken service

Thousands of Durham residents pay $60 a year for yard waste and recycling barrels.

A year-and-a-half after a huge landfill fire, the city is still collecting the yard waste and simply dumping it in with regular garbage.

The process was on display outside the Durham Waste Disposal and Recycling Center Friday.

The transfer station closed because a garbage compactor was not working.

However, the City was turning away trucks with garbage and yard waste.

The mixed-up garbage and yard trimmings go to a landfill in Virginia. The City says it hopes to begin recycling yard waste again in a month or two.
