The number of Americans who regularly wash their hands is declining, according to researchers from the Soap and Detergent Association.

The group gives the nation a C- in the hygiene department.

In the SDA's 2008 survey, 85 percent of respondents say they always wash their hands after using the bathroom in comparison to 92 percent in 2006.

A SDA official recommends washing hands regularly throughout the day to avoid a trip to the doctor's office during the upcoming cold and flu season.
