The NC Highway Patrol told Eyewitness News 17-year-old Steven Andrew Smith of Angier was killed when the car he was riding in ran off of Highway 50 and Zacks Mill Rd.
The driver, 17-year-old Dennis Dewitt, was injured in the crash after he lost control of the vehicle, crossed the center line and over corrected, causing the vehicle to flip several times.
Troopers say Smith was wearing his seat belt and excessive speed was a factor. Dewitt has been charged with misdemeanour death by motor vehicle and exceeding a safe speed.
He is out on an unsecured bond. First court day is December 2.
No other vehicles were involved.
