Thieves target patients

DURHAM It's happening at the office park at North Roxboro and Carver Street. The problem is so bad that there have been signs up warning people not to leave valuables in their cars.

"I don't have GPS in this car. I don't leave anything valuable in sight. If I have anything valuable it goes in the building with me," said Thomas Lester, who works in the building.

Patients say they've gotten the message.

"Especially packages, or anything that I don't want to have taken, I just put it in the trunk and lock it up and that works pretty well," said patient Nancy Lee-Phillips.

Lee-Philips said she thinks the bad economy is part of the problem.

There's a lot of people who are in dire straits and they're trying to get whatever they can get to make it through I suppose. It's not right, but I understand," she said.

Police say no matter where you go, it's never a good idea to leave valuables in your car out in plain sight. That's just a temptation for thieves to break in.
