Durham County commissioners learned they're facing a more than $5 million budget shortfall Monday because of the slumping economy. Now, they're proposing Durham County Schools cutback by 3 percent, and they're proposing other county departments slash their budgets by 6 percent.

Nothing is final until the Commission holds public meetings.

Durham County has already put a hiring and capital purchasing freeze in place to try and cut corners wherever possible. It's also looking at the possibility of putting off major building projects if possible.
