Man sentenced for toddler shooting

RALEIGH Eric Hinton, 26, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was given a sentence of 20-24 months for the manslaughter charge and 16-20 months for the firearm. The sentences will run consecutively, which means he will serve a minimum of 3 years and a maximum of 3 years, 8 months.

Raleigh detectives say Hinton's 3-year-old son Pharell got hold of his father's gun and shot himself on Christmas Eve. It happened at a home on Ujamaa Drive.

It not the first time Hinton has been in trouble with the law. He has past arrests for larceny, trespass, possession of stolen goods and drug use and possession. He served six months in jail in 2006.
