The first conventional military unit to deploy solely focused on mentoring is leaving its North Carolina base for Afghanistan. The 4th Brigade of the 82nd Airborne Division will depart this week.

They are part of a 60,000-troop surge to help stabilize the country. President Barack Obama has made training Afghan police a central part of his new strategy.

The 3,300 paratrooper brigade will embed teams of combat advisers with national police units.
