Authorities said Caesar Hernandez was driving in a red 1995 Saturn when he exited off I-40 at Page Road and tried to merge back onto I-40, but he hit a DOT message board, crossed three lanes of traffic, struck a car and then a barrier wall.
A family of four inside the car he hit was not injured.
Hernandez was taken to Duke Hospital with serious injuries and was later released Sunday morning.
He has been charged with felonious hit-and-run and driving without a license. Hernandez's bond has been set at $10,000.
