Wednesday is Walk to School Day

WAKEFIELD "Running is something that you can actually lose weight," fifth grader Megan Mallory said.

Walking is a healthy alternative to riding to schoo, and millions of people around the world will walk instead of riding today.

"There's a big epidemic of obesity in our kids and one of the things that's an event in our Wake County school system is to try to get as many people to walk to school as possible," Physical Education Specialist Carl Hill said.

Besides the obvious physical benefits, the day aims to raise awareness of how walkable a community is and to reduce traffic pollution.

At Wakefield Elementary, more than 300 students are expected to walk to school. The school has taken part in the day for several years and the movement continues to grow.

There are 65 schools across NC taking part in Walk to School Day. Sixteen of those are Triangle schools.
