Two killed in Orange County crash

ORANGE COUNTY

Just after 10 a.m., authorities were dispatched to Guess Road at the intersection of NC 57 in the Caldwell community.

Authorities told ABC11 Eyewitness News the victims are from Georgia.

The Guess Rd. intersection is familiar to Highway Patrol officers and locals because the one road has a stop sign and the other has a flashing light.

Authorities believe the women who were killed may not have known the road well because they were from out of state.

According to a Highway Patrol officer, the Jeep Cherokee that the victims were in ran the stop sign and was t-boned by a pick-up truck. The SUV then flipped and landed in a ditch, killing the female driver and her female passenger.

The driver in the pick-up was seriously hurt. He is identified as 23-year-old Timothy James Whitfield.

The local fire chief told ABC11 Eyewitness News changes are needed at the intersection. He said there are three to five fatal wrecks at the intersection a year, but so far, the DOT has not made changes.

The identities of the victims have not been released.
