Teen turns himself in for fatal crash

RALEIGH

The North Carolina Highway Patrol says Austin Marx admitted he was driving between 85 and 90 miles per hour when he lost control of a 1996 Chevy Camaro on Puryear Road near the intersection of Marks Creek, just north of U.S. 64 near Knightdale.

His passenger - 16-year-old Gavin Westover - died of his injuries Tuesday.

The teens were on a lunch break from East Wake High School at the time of the accident.

Marx had visible scratches on his face from the crash when he came in to be booked on the charge with his family. Officials said was released back to his family instead of being kept in jail.

Westover was a member of the school's wrestling team last year. He is the second East Wake High School student to die in a car crash this year.

The school principal says grief counselors have been available for students to help them deal with their loss.
