Deadly wave of shootings in Rocky Mount

ROCKY MOUNT The first of the two shootings happened just after 11:45 Friday morning. In that incident, Rocky Mount police say a man was shot in the back in the area of 321 North Howell St.

Responding officers found the victim in the back yard. He was transported to Pitt Memorial Hospital, and is listed in stable condition.

A suspect was arrested early Saturday morning and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicing serious injury.

Officers made that arrest a few hours after another shooting in the city that killed a man.

In that incident, police say two men - Vernon Foster, 35, and Brian Edwards, 22 - were playing cards at a home on Beverly Road, when two unknown black men knocked on the door, forced their way in, and shot and killed Foster.

Police say Edwards then ran to a nearby home down the street. One of the suspects followed and shot him, as well as 61-year-old Harold Sanders, who was inside the home.

Both Edwards and Sanders are in critical condition at Pitt Memorial.

Police think the motive may have been robbery. They are still looking for the suspects.
