Fatal crash suspect turns himself in

FAYETTEVILLE

Fayetteville police said Thursday night that 24-year-old Percyful Junior McIntyre turned himself into officers at the Fayetteville Police Department around 9:30 p.m.

Police say McIntyre was driving a stolen silver Ford F-150 when it crashed into John Velandra early Wednesday morning, during a police chase.

Velandra, was pronounced dead at the hospital and McIntyre fled the scene on foot.

The incident began with a complaint call about a man looking into vehicles. Police said the man refused to stop for officers and was driving close to 90 mph.

They followed him towards Pamalee Drive and Cain Road, blocking the intersection to help control traffic and try to prevent other vehicles from being struck.

While at the intersection, police said Velandra did not yield to the officers and proceeded through the intersection on a green light. That's when the pickup truck hit his car.

Police said Wednesday that McIntyre would be charged with second-degree murder, felony speeding to elude, larceny of a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, and felony hit-and-run, but they have not said if he has officially been charged.

The Fayetteville Police Department's Traffic and Homicide units are investigating the case, and a criminal investigation is ongoing.
