Mother abandons son at convenience store after fight

CUMBERLAND COUNTY Cumberland County Sheriff's Detectives have charged 36-year-old Dorothy Doyle of Elizabethtown with forcing her son out of her vehicle and leaving him at a convenience store on New Year's Eve night.

Investigators say on Dec. 31 around 7:30 p.m., Doyle and her son began to argue, because she wanted to go be with a friend in Sanford and he wanted to go home.

Police say Doyle then forced her son out of the car at a Kangaroo gas station in Spring Lake and left him by himself for about eight hours.

Sheriff's Deputies attempted to contact Doyle several times throughout the night, but were unsuccessful. She did not return calls until around 3:30 a.m. on New Year's Day.

Police have charged the mother with child abuse and contributing to a juvenile being neglected.

Doyle later surrendered to authorities late Thursday night.

She was released from the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $500 unsecured bond.

Authorities say Doyle is expected to appear in court on child abuse charges next month.
