Authorities say they were notified shortly after noon by a resident in the area, wo said he had found what he believed to be a makeshift grave in a wooded area behind an abandoned house.
"What we saw initially, not even sure, an arm or something the body was intact when they removed it from that site," Oxford Police Chief John Wolford said. "It appears they did a little work to put this person there."
Once the body was removed from the sight, authorities identified the body as 54-year-old Kirk Douglas Wright Sr.
Hours earlier, someone reported Wright missing. They say he hadn't been seen since last Saturday or Sunday.
While searching for Wright in his Granville Street neighborhood, Wednesday a witness took officers to where they eventually recovered his body.
Police won't yet say how Wright died, but friends and neighbors believe he was killed by a relative - however the police chief will not confirm that.
"This may be related to someone who knew him very well and it very well may not and we'll probably make a better determination of that in the next 48 hours," Wolford said.
Wright's body has been taken to the medical examiner's office for analysis.
The case is currently under investigation.
