Police suspect nephew in Oxford murder

OXFORD Oxford police department detectives and the SBI on Friday obtained warrants for Michael S. Wright, 26, for first degree murder in the death of Kirk Wright Sr.

Wright is a nephew of the victim, whose body was found buried in a shallow grave last Wednesday in a wooded area adjacent to a vacant house at the end of 4th St. in the city. Kirk Wright had been reported missing by family members earlier in the day. Preliminary reports from the Medical Examiner's Office in Chapel Hill indicate that the primary cause of death was asphyxiation.

Oxford detectives and SBI agents spent the weekend interviewing witnesses who have been in contact with Wright since Wednesday, officials said.

They have traveled to a number of cities in the Raleigh/Durham and Triad area following leads in their attempt to locate Wright.

"We have been actively involved with the investigation of Mr. Wright's murder since Wednesday night, said John Wolford, the chief of the Oxford Police Department. "The suspect, Michael Wright is a convicted felon who recently got out of prison. He has an extensive criminal history and should be considered armed and potentially violent. We are confident this was not a random act of violence in an otherwise relatively peaceful neighborhood".

Anyone with information regarding Michael Wright's whereabouts should call Granville County Crimestoppers at 919-693-3100 Oxford Police Department Detectives Sgt. Lynn Curl 919-603-1208, Detective Pat Ford 919-603-1209 or the SBI. All information will remain confidential.

Michael Wright is described as a black male, age 26, 6' 2" in height, 227 lbs.
