Man accused of running over five stands trial

CUMBERLAND COUNTY Abdullah Shareef, 31, allegedly hit his victims with two stolen vehicles in 2004. Lonel Bass died from his injuries.

Seth Thompson says he is lucky he didn't. He says he came face-to-face with Shareef at his home off Highway 217.

"The driver floored it and he hit me with the truck, knock me down and drug me 40-45 feet underneath the front of the truck," Thompson said.

It had rained the night before. Thompson says the wet ground may have saved his life.

He says the truck's wheels were spinning in place while he was underneath.

Thompson managed to get out and chase Shareef in his truck at 90 mph.

The chase ended when Shareef crashed his second stolen vehicle in Fuquay Varina.

Two other victims testified Monday and still show physical signs from the attack.

David McAskill walks with a cane. His right ankle was crushed when investigators say he was run over while walking his dogs near his home.

And former Pine Forest High School Football Coach Gary Weller is in a wheelchair. Investigators say he was out on a morning run when Shareef ran over him twice.

The judge says it took the defense and prosecution two weeks to seat a jury because Shareef could face the death penalty if convicted.
