Fire and explosion destroy home

A home in a Johnston County subdivision caught fire Friday afternoon sending up a column of smoke that was visible for miles.

Witnesses said they heard an explosion before the house near the intersection of Serenity Road and Campground Road was completely destroyed. Authorities say the fire originated in the back of the home.

There were no reports of injuries.

Neighbors said the family living in the home had gone on a trip to Raleigh and was alerted by firefighters about what happened.

Homeowners Mike and Roberta Cox says it couldn't have come at a worse time, they just got married and both are unemployed.
