Officials said they rescued 35 abused animals and arrested 76-year-old Harry Hargrove of Buck Hill Road in Mt. Olive after receiving a tip from an animal abuse hotline.
Also found was a fighting ring and training materials. Several dogs were discovered dead on the property.
Hargrove faces felony charges.
Private investigators with the Atlanta based security firm Norred & Associates were assisting in the investigation. Norred runs a campaign to stamp out dog-fighting in the Southeast and runs the website www.helpstopdogfighting.com.
The Atlanta Humane Society has sent its Humane Emergency Animal Rescue Team (HEART) and a trailer to help evaluate and treat the dogs seized in Duplin.
