Wake Schools release new reassignments

RALEIGH

Today parents can check their magnet and calendar applications online.

You'll need the confirmation number you received when you registered to retrieve your assignment. If you've lost it, contact Growth and Planning at 850-1921 or the Manet Resource Center at 501-7900.

Families have until next Friday, April 23, to decide whether to accept the new assignment.

Some parents are concerned that children who currently attend school together will be split up. A group of neighbors in a Morrisville neighborhood recently found out the school board is considering changing their school from Green Hope Elementary, which is three miles from their home to Weatherstone Elementary -- six mile away.

"Prior to this change, Morrisville did have pretty much neighborhood schools when it came to traditional and year-round," parent Dave Grennan said.

He says there are four other elementary schools closer than Weatherstone.

"We also have Mills Park, Green Hope, Cedar Fork, and Davis Drive, which will be traditional schools for the 2010, 2011 and those are closer than that of Weatherstone," Grennan said.

School board member John Tedesco is asking for patience.

"We understand some people don't want to be moved from six miles to ten miles, but there are some people who are going an hour away," Tedesco said.

Parents have one week to accept or reject their requested assignment, and they should do so on the Wake Schools Web site.

The original notification date was March 18., but it was pushed back twice because of assignment changes and calendar conversions made by the school board.
