Police chase ends in Durham field

DURHAM COUNTY

Chopper 11 HD captured images of the stolen silver Acura after police eventually caught up with it.

Authorities say the dangerous game of cat and mouse lasted between 25 and 30 minutes.

The chase took Durham officers and state troopers to I-85, Roxboro and Cheek roads.

Police wouldn't say how high speeds reached, but it got dicey during busy rush hour traffic on Gibson Road with the suspect pushing at least one woman's car into a mailbox, shattering her windshield.

At about 6:40 p.m., it finally ended on South Mineral Springs Road in east Durham.

Durham police said Friday that it all began when a man gave a ride to a stranger to Mallory Lane Thursday afternoon. When they got there, the driver said the passenger pulled out a gun and took the car.

He reported the car stolen, and an officer spotted it - starting the chase.

No injuries were reported.

The alleged thief, Brandon McDowell, 24, of Camden Avenue, was arrested and charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, felony fleeing to elude officers and larceny of a motor vehicle.

He was in the Durham County Jail Friday under a $350,000 bond.
