Fatal crash under investigation

DURHAM Durham Police say they're trying to figure out why a teen driver crossed the center line, crashing into another vehicle.

The driver of that car, 63-year-old Bettie Boring, died at the scene.

Police say they are certain speed and alcohol did not contribute to the crash, but exactly what happened is still part of an ongoing investigation.

According to Boring's co-worker, Boring was headed home from work at UNC's Heart And Vascular Care Center when the accident happened.

"She treated her physicians like they were part of her family and she tried to take care of them," co-worker Linda Raferty said. "Everybody's been shocked all day … we quickly got the word out and we're trying to figure out how to support her family."

Allyn Hubbard Hunt, the 18-year-old driver behind the wheel who crossed the center line, attends Jordan High School, which is less than a half mile away from the crash site.

Its unclear if he was suddenly distracted or encountered a mechanical problem at the scene.

Kammie Michael with the Durham Police Department said Friday that Hunt was cited with misdemeanor death by vehicle and driving left of center.

He was cited not arrested and is currently in the custody of his parents and expected to appear in court.
