Two Lejeune Marines killed in Afghanistan

CAMP LEJEUNE

Sgt. Shanfield, 22, of Hastings, Pa., was a squad leader assigned to 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 7, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward. Shanfield joined the Marine Corps in September 2005, and was promoted to the rank of sergeant on April 2, 2010.

He deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in May 2010.

His awards include the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Sgt. Walters, 24, of Palm Coast, Fla., squad leader assigned to 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 7, and I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward. Walters joined the Marine Corps in May 2005, and was promoted to the rank of sergeant on August 1, 2008.

He deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from August 2008 to March 2009 and to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in May 2010.

His awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
