An inmate work crew discovered human remains covered in plastic in north Durham County Wednesday.

On Thurday, authorities identified the body as 44-year-old Wanda Rose Spence. She had been reported missing by her family in Durham since last Tuesday.

Her remains were found next to Old Oxford Highway, near the intersection with Hamlin Road.

Detectives said a state crew was picking up litter when it spotted the body in a heavily wooded area and called authorities around 10 a.m.

Authorities have not said how Spence died.
