Power restored to thousands Monday

The power went out just after 9 p.m. Sunday when severe thunderstorms moved through the Triangle. Witnesses in Wake County told ABC11 Eyewitness News that's when they heard a pop and saw lightning strike.

An electrical transformer in a substation in Wendell caught fire and it's believed the lightning is to blame, but officials have not confirmed that. An investigation is underway.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze by 11 p.m.

In Durham, storms downed trees and outages were reported in the Guess Road area.
