I-440 West
I-440 West (formerly designated the Outer Beltline) in Wake County will be reduced to one lane between the I-40 East/I-440 West split and Poole Road from Friday, Aug. 27, at 9 p.m. to Monday, Aug. 30, at 6 a.m., weather permitting.
The closure is part of a $3.4 million project funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to resurface a 2.5-mile section of I-440 from I-40 to the U.S. 64/264 Bypass.
Motorists on I-440 West will be shifted into the far left lane and will not have access to Poole Road.
Motorists traveling on I-440 West needing to access Poole Road should use the following signed detour: I-440 West to U.S. 64/264 East (Exit 14) to New Hope Road (Exit 420) to Poole Road
In addition, the ramp from I-40 West to I-440 West will be closed.
Motorists traveling on I-40 West needing to access I-440 West should use the following detour: I-40 West to Jones Sausage Road (Exit 303) to Rock Quarry Road to New Hope Road to Poole Road to I-440 West.
Traffic heading to a concert Friday, Saturday or Sunday evening at the Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion at Walnut Creek is expected to add to the delays associated with the project. To avoid congestion, motorists on I-40 West wanting to access I-440 should use the following alternate route between 5 p.m. and midnight: I-40 West to I-440 East.
Ramp Closures From I-540 South to I-40 in Wake and Durham Counties
And, the DOT will continue temporary ramp closures this weekend from southbound I-540 to I-40 East and West beginning tonight at 9 p.m., until Monday, Aug. 30, at 6 a.m., weather permitting. Approximately two more weekends of ramp closures are expected during this project.
The closure is necessary for the construction of an additional lane on both I-540 South and I-40 West. The new outer lane will begin south of the Pleasant Grove Church Road overpass on I-540 and continue onto I-40 West, ending at the Page Road exit.
The project will help alleviate backups on I-540 South, where there is currently a single lane for vehicles exiting onto both I-40 East and West. The I-40 portion of the project will improve traffic flow and the safety of westbound motorists who are exiting at Page Road.
In addition, the right lane of I-40 West will be closed from I-540 to Page Road.
During construction, a signed detour route will be in place for motorists traveling on I-540 South to both directions of I-40. Motorists will stay on I-540 past I-40, where it becomes N.C. 540. They will then take N.C. 54 West (Exit 69) toward Chapel Hill and follow it onto Miami Boulevard to access I-40.
