NC House member uses gay slurs in email

RALEIGH

The email from Rep. Larry Brown (R- Kernersville) is in response to a message from House Minority Leader Paul Stam of Apex about House Speaker Joe Hackney getting an award from the Equality NC Foundation, a gay-rights group.

"I hope all the queers are thrilled to see him," reads the message. "I am sure there will be a couple legislative fruitloops there in the audience."

North Carolina's House Republican leader Paul Stam says he warned Brown about the email last week - saying that he neither uses that language nor encourages it.

Brown sent his email to about 60 people. He has not responded to a request for comment.

Ian Palmquist, executive director of Equality North Carolina, said Brown should apologize for using anti-gay slurs.
