Missing kayaker identified, search continues

FORT BRAGG Fort Bragg Army civilian employee missing since his kayak capsized on the Little River on Fort Bragg Sunday has been identified as Alexander "Possum" Gillespie of Fayetteville.

Authorities say Gillespie went over the dam on the river. They say his kayak resurfaced, but he did not. Two other kayakers were able to make it to shore safely and called 911.

Since Sunday, Fort Bragg Emergency Services personnel have coordinated a massive rescue effort with soldiers and equipment from across Fort Bragg and local, county and state law enforcement and rescue teams.

Officials say the biggest difficultly in the search so far has been swift moving water, high brush and steep banks. Water levels of the Little River have dropped from 11.5 to 6 feet in the days since Gillespie went missing.
