The accident happened just after 3:30 a.m. Sunday morning on NC 222 near Airport Road - about 2 miles east of Freemont.
Troopers say a car driven by 17-year-old Mark Aaron Pope of Fremont was speeding when he approached a curve, crossed the center line several times, hit a large ditch, and overturned the car. It landed on its roof.
Killed in the wreck were 18-year-old Ashley Nicole Haskins, 25-year-old Joshua Leon Brantley, and 17-year-old Jacob Allen Floars - all of Fremont.
Only the driver, Pope, was wearing his seatbelt. He was airlifted to Pitt Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
Troopers estimate that Pope was travelling around 80 miles-an-hour in a 55 mile an hour zone.
There were no witnesses to the accident.
Troopers say excessive speed played a major factor in the crash and it is too early to tell if alcohol or drug use contributed to the wreck, which remains under investigation.
