Car slams into Cumberland County school bus

FAYETTEVILLE It happened shortly after 4 p.m. on Shaw Road where there is a dip and curve in the road between Bragg Boulevard and Murchison Road.

Authorities say the car was speeding through the curve; the driver lost control and swerved sideways hitting the bus nearly head-on.

One child on the bus, the bus driver and the school bus monitor on bus 597 -- an exceptional students bus from Westover High School -- were taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries and later released.

The driver of the car was airlifted to UNC hospitals in critical condition.

"We found one male trapped in the car and it took about 20 minutes for our heavy rescue companies extricate him from the vehicle," Fayetteville Fire Department Commander Calvin Bishop said.

The accident blocked traffic on Shaw Road for two hours as the wreckage was cleared.
