She was surprised with the honor at the school Monday morning.
Before serving at City of Medicine, Shearer was principal at Lakewood Elementary School.
"It's very important to me because I have worked in Durham Public for over twenty years and it's a wonderful recognition of the work that I do and how I do it and for that I am very pleased," said Shearer Monday.
Shearer goes on to compete to be state principal of the year.
