Captain Danny Bailey tells ABC11 Eyewitness News that the couple was found at Laythe's mother's house.
Deputies determined from neighbors that a red Honda CRV that was parked in the yard of the home was a vehicle that was not supposed to be at the house.
When deputies entered the pool house located near the house, they found Laythe and his girlfriend, 46-year-old Angela Miller of Morehead City, both dead from apparent gunshot wounds.
Due to evidence at the scene, detectives say they have determined the incident was a murder-suicide or a double suicide. The investigation is continuing.
Their bodies have been taken to the medical examiner in Greenville for autopsy.
