Roanoke Rapids man murdered


Jeremy "Jay" Hecht, 31, was stabbed multiple times. Halifax County Sheriff's deputies found Hecht when they responded to an assault call at a residence on Old Halifax Road at 2:44 a.m.

Hecht was transported to Halifax Regional Hospital, where he later died.

The investigation led to the arrest of John Butler, 46, also from Roanoke Rapids. Butler is charged with murder and is being held without bond.

In a news release, the Halifax County Sheriff's Office said the victim and suspect were acquainted.
