Man charged with attacking girlfriend

CUMBERLAND COUNTY Police say 35-year-old James Raymond Owens turned himself into law enforcement officers Thursday.

Owens is charged with attempted first degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and tampering with 911 services.

Investigators say on October 30, Owens became violent during an argument with his girlfriend, 44-year-old Jeanie Newell of Fayetteville and allegedly hit her repeatedly on the head and face with his fists and a beer bottle.

Newell lost consciousness during the assault, but was later able to call 911 for help.

Newell was transported to Betsy Johnson Hospital for treatment and was later moved to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill for intensive care. Physicians say Newell now suffers from a head injury that has impaired her memory.

Owens is being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $500,000 secured bond.
