Soldier arrested for fatal Fayetteville shooting

FAYETTEVILLE Authorities say Staggs left his favorite restaurant on Bonanza Drive around 8 p.m. Saturday and was sitting in his car when Mims walked up and shot him.

He was shot in the head and his car was riddled with bullets. Police say it was a random act of violence.

Mims is currently in custody in Key West, Florida charged with first degree murder.

Police say Mims doesn't have a criminal or violent record in the Fayetteville area.

His arrest came on the same day as Staggs 24th birthday.

With candles held high, friends and family celebrated his life Tuesday during a vigil.

"I don't wish this on anybody and I still can't get over it, believe it's real,'' Staggs' mother Susan Divine said.

"He was always loving in a heart, he was a big teddy bear that's what we knew him for as 'Big Red,'" Staggs' friend Charles McLaughlin said.

Plans for memorial services for Staggs have not yet been released.
