Man flees traffic stop, leaves children in car

WAKE COUNTY

A North Carolina Highway Trooper pulled over 24-year-old Lamonte Edward Smith, Jr. for an expired license plate just off of Highway 264 and Rolesville Road. When Smith's vehicle came to a stop, the trooper says Smith jumped out and ran into the woods.

Residents who live in the area where Smith was last seen are on edge.

"Very scary," Martha Evans said. "All the woods around us, you know, have your guard up, you know."

Highway Patrol says Smith was driving a dark blue car. He left 2-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy inside, both unharmed.

A K-9 unit helped in the search for several hours, but came up empty.

"Just a bunch of police and I saw a dog and a couple of men with the dog," Evans said.

Troopers say Smith has outstanding warrants and remain on the run. He was last seen wearing khaki shorts and a red shirt.

In the meantime, the children are staying with some relatives.

If you have information that can help in the search for Smith, contact police.
