RALEIGH

Raleigh residents made frantic calls to 911 as they witnessed a tornado rip through their neighborhoods knocking down trees and power lines.

In downtown Raleigh, many neighborhoods suffered major damage and Shaw University was forced to end its semester eight days early.

In northeast Raleigh, four children were killed. A tree crashed into their mobile home as they hid for safety.

With hundreds of households affected in the Raleigh city limits, these calls provide a tiny glimpse into what many people experienced that day.
