Police canvass neighborhood where girl was murdered

DURHAM

In addition to that effort, police are following new leads in the case.

Shakanah China was gunned down in front of her Atka Court apartment on May 10 in what her family calls a gang shooting. Now, police are canvassing near the scene but releasing few details.

ABC11 Eyewitness News has learned police recovered the van believed to be involved in the shooting, and they've spoken to the owner of that vehicle as part of their investigation.

ABC11 also was told investigators are tracking down a new lead that could bring them closer to catching a killer.

Friends of Shakanah's family say it's been rocked by the tragedy and convinced it to move out of a neighborhood plagued by violence so many times before.

Fearing for her surviving children's' safety, China's mother has left the place she last saw her daughter alive.

Police and volunteers continue to go door-to-door hoping to make residents feel safer and possibly turn up new leads.
