Wilson church begins recovery after fire

WILSON It happened at the First Free Will Baptist Church at 4865 Nash Street Northwest in Wilson Friday evening.

That's east of I-95 and east of the airport.

A witness told ABC11 that there was a graduation party at the activity building about 100 yards from the main church building. The witness said the group heard a loud pop around 9 p.m., then a crack, and ran outside to see smoke coming from the top of the church.

Several people in the main church building got out safely.

More than a dozen fire trucks from various departments were on scene.

Officials said there was significant damage to the structure.

Contractors tell Eyewitness News it will take about four months to fix.
