Cary woman attacked after witnessing break-in

CARY

Cary police say the suspect was dressed to blend in and carried a clipboard. He was spotted breaking into a home on Park Crest Drive last week.

"He was carrying a clipboard, so it looks like maybe he was looking at water meters, that type of thing," said Captain Mike Williams of the Cary Police Department.

A neighbor noticed the suspect and as she called her friend to see if he had scheduled work on his home, she got a good look at Anwar Overby and his car. Police say as the woman caught a glimpse of Overby, he went after her.

"He chased her a short period of time and was able to catch her, knock her to the ground and took her phone away from her," Williams added.

The woman spent the day in the hospital with serious injuries to her hand. Police released the 911 call Tuesday.

Victim: "He grabbed my cell phone 'cuz I was trying to call 911...
9-1-1: "Okay, is he white, black or Hispanic?"
Victim: "He's a huge black guy and he chased me down the street and threw me down... I think my fingers are broken..."
9-1-1: "Listen... what was he wearing?"
Victim: "And he grabbed my neck... and he was wearing a... um..."
9-1-1: "Give me one moment..."
Victim: "If you call my phone, he took my phone..."

"When we were out there, we saw multiple police cars and an ambulance," said Tom Gibbons, homeowner.

He says he can't believe the suspect chased and attacked someone on his street.

"It shows he was violent," Gibbons said. "You could tell this is someone who has done this before and really wasn't worried about getting caught or maybe he was thinking I'll silence the person who had seen me. So, that was kind of the scary thing."

Police say Overby has committed similar crimes before. He's a habitual felon charged with three break-ins in Durham last year.

"It's one thing to break in, but when you've seen somebody has seen and is a witness, and you chase that person down, that's troubling to us," Captain Williams said. "We want to make sure we get that person off the streets as quick as possible."

Police say if you see Overby, call 911. He was last seen in a silver 2001 Chevy Cavalier with NC license plate RZW 1508.
