The sheriff's office said the victim initially reported what happened to military authorities who forwarded it on to deputies on the evening of April 12.

"We want the public to know that they should be aware of their safety at all times," said Debbie Tanna, with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

There have been a string of reported attacks in the area in the past, which include rapes and assaults in 2006, 2007 and 2008. No arrests were ever made. Deputies are now reviewing those cases for any link to the latest attack.

"If you jog, make sure, especially if you are in this area, that you are aware of your surroundings and that you have a partner you are jogging with," said Tanna.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office at (910) 323-1500.
