Cold, flu hitting Triangle area hard

RALEIGH

There's an unusually high number of cold and flu related doctor visits this year and North Carolina is one of the areas getting hit hardest.

There have been cases of people coughing or hacking over the past few weeks. Doctors told ABC11 that there is definitely something going around and it's out of the norm.

Local doctors said an unusually early start to the flu season combined with a uniquely nasty strain of cold virus going around is making for a lot of sick people across the area.

"What it originally was, it was the start of a really bad cold, which started with a sore throat. It kind of morphed into congestion, upper respiratory, lower respiratory," said pharmacy Brent Talley. "It makes you feel really run down. It's a really bad cold, and it's hit most of this area really hard."

Confirmed flu cases are up across the area. WakeMed's Raleigh campus has already counted 36 confirmed flu cases. At this same time last year, it only had 10.
