The blaze was reported in the 100 block of Southern Avenue near Whitfield Street.
Firefighters were unable to help the elderly woman, but did rescue her dog. Emergency workers were seen outside giving the animal oxygen.
The investigation into the cause of the blaze was just getting underway. The woman's name had not been released.
