Pedestrian struck, killed by train in Durham

DURHAM

It happened just before 7:45 p.m. Tuesday about one quarter of a mile from the railroad crossing on Buchanan Boulevard near West Main Street.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities later identified the victim as 78-year-old Raymond Jacob Phillips Jr. of Chapel Hill.

The train, Amtrak Piedmont #76, was traveling east toward Raleigh at the time of the incident.

There were 35 people onboard the train. No one on the train was injured.

The train resumed its route around 10 p.m.
