Duane Swell Hunter was driving on McRainey Road off U.S. 301 near St. Pauls just before 12:30 p.m. Sunday when his Harley Davidson ran off of the road not far from his home.
According to Sgt. Daniel Hilburn with the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Hunter's bike struck a highway sign, ejecting the police detective.
The road was at a curve, and authorities said Hunter was exceeding a safe speed when the accident happened.
The 53 year old was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton, where he later died after suffering multiple injuries. He was wearing a helmet, according to police.
Hunter's motorcycle was reportedly destroyed in the accident.
