Hagan issues statement on budget approval

WASHINGTON

"I am grateful to Senator Murray for her hard work putting together this budget. As someone who wrote budgets in the North Carolina state Senate, I understand this is not an easy process.

"I am pleased that the Senate approved my deficit-neutral amendments, on a bipartisan basis, to make room in the budget to support military families and to strengthen trade enforcement. I was also pleased to help pass an amendment to assist in repealing the medical device tax and encouraging innovation without adding to our deficit.

"However, as a Senator from the most military-friendly state in the nation, I am concerned that the $240 billion in cuts to defense spending called for in this budget resolution are too deep. Our military is already grappling with the deep cuts forced by sequestration this year, and in order to prevent damage to our national security and military communities I strongly believe that any further cuts should only be made in cooperation with our military leadership. I am concerned that the cuts in this budget could further hamper our military's ability to maintain readiness, while also harming the military communities across North Carolina.

"Our country needs a long-term deficit reduction plan that is balanced and bipartisan, and we must work to balance the budget. I will keep working with my colleagues to get our fiscal house in order while keeping our commitment to seniors and students, to veterans and active duty service members, and to all of North Carolina's middle class families."
