Southern Pines shooting suspect who walked out of hospital arrested

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C.

Larry Leverette, turned himself in Monday to the Moore County Sheriff's Department. He was wanted on outstanding arrest warrants related to a shooting at the Brookside Park Apartments.

When authorities arrived at the scene Friday, they found two victims suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Leverette was airlifted to the trauma center at UNC Hospital. Police said he was shot four times and returned fire at the other victim. Leverette, who had outstanding warrants for his arrest, was under the supervision of the UNC Police Department while being treated for his injuries.

On Saturday before noon, authorities said the 21 year old eluded UNC officials and fled the hospital property with the help of three people.

Surveillance video captured him leaving in a red Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Jeep was later spotted back at the Brookside Park Apartments, along with Leverette's girlfriend, Shataya Evans.

She was arrested on drug possession and later released on bond. It is unclear if she was one of the three people who police said helped Leverette flee from the hospital.

Leverette has been charged with the intent to kill inflicting serious bodily injury, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of firearm with altered serial number, discharging a weapon into an occupied dwelling or vehicle, and probation violation, all felonies.

He was also charged with trafficking cocaine, possession of cocaine, possession with intent to sell/manufacture/distribute cocaine, all of which are felonies. He faces charges for possession marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia as well.

Police said the outstanding warrants for Leverette are for similar charges stemming from another incident in 2011.

Leverette was being held at the Moore County Detention Center under a $1,200,000 secure bond.

Authorities have not released details about the other victim or many details about Friday's shooting. However, they did say two semi-automatic handguns believed to be involved in the incident have been recovered.

Meanwhile, police are also investigating a fire that broke out at the Brookside Park Apartments hours after the shooting. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the blaze to see if the two incidents are related.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Southern Pines Police Department Investigation Division at (910) 693-1481 or the crime tip line at (910) 693-4110.
