Troopers were called to N.C. Highway 42 near Gardner School Road, which is just east of Wilson, about 12:15 a.m. Friday.
They say someone hit a moped from behind and did not stop.
Hugh Johnston, 58, was taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville where he later died.
Troopers are looking for a silver or gray Chrysler.
