Red Route could soon be back under consideration

RALEIGH

The bill, which details how the Department of Transportation will complete N.C. Highway 540 south of Raleigh, is head to Gov. Pat McCrory's desk for his signature.

In 2011, then-governor Bev Perdue signed a law blocking the potential 540 extension that was slated to run through parts of Garner.

Currently, the law prevents the DOT from even studying the route.

The DOT has said it has other routes in mind, but needs to study the Red Route in order to secure federal funding.
