Chapel Hill death blamed on Thursday storms

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.

Orange County Emergency Services said the woman was pinned under the tree that was brought down by the storm's powerful winds around 5:20 p.m. in the 300-block of Franklin Street. She was rushed to the UNC Hospital Emergency Room where she later died.

UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Holden Thorp identified the student as Xuezhou Nan, a senior from Cary. She was also known as Julia, Thorp said.

"It is so hard to lose one so young, especially in such a terrible, random and tragic event," Thorp said in a statement. "I hope that all of you, Julia's fellow Tar Heels, will keep her family and friends in your thoughts at this sad time."

ABC11 spoke with Nan's father Friday. He told us she was a Panther Creek High School student originally from China. He said her mother and sisters were travelling in China and were returning.

Nan was a rising senior at UNC known for her excellence on the piano. Her father said she wanted to be a dentist.
